Holly Craine was born in Toronto in the and grew up in rural Ontario, Canada. She was given a manual Nikon for her 18th birthday, which she took everywhere. That camera lasted her for over 16 years. Her love for the process lead her to take a creative photography program at Humber College in Toronto in the late 80's. In the late 90's she was offered a video camera. Again, she was inseparable from the lens and accumulated hours upon hours of footage around her city. A friend offered her a studio to cut a project, so she decided to film what she felt she had a lot knowledge about, and that was, serving! Being a veteran server of over 20 years gave her a lot of material to work with. Hence, her first feature documentary 'Are You on the Menu?' was born. (View it here under Videos!). In the meantime Craine went from working in 'the industry' to working in film in Toronto on commercials and music videos. After finishing her film, she wanted to make a larger and more improved documentary about a subject she is passionate about; music! Being a music fanatic, Craine took the stance to expose what goes on behind a recording. She felt that the process of making a film and and making an album crossed wires. So, she decided to start interviewing audio engineers to get their take on recording. She came up with the name Engine Ears and started recruiting some very renowned subjects for the film early 2002, starting the interviews at the first Tape Op Conference in Portland, Oregon in 2003. Her subjects have worked on such albums for Peter Gabriel, Nirvana, Tool and Rage Against the Machine, to name a few. Since then Craine has completed filming and is in the finishing stages of Engine Ears!
Where Does the Name Violet Biggs Come From?
I get this question a lot.
When I was a kid I was enamoured by the likes of glamorous starlets of the 40’s such as Hedy Lammar, Ava Gardner and Lana Turner.
Violet Biggs was a character in Frank Capra’s popular 1946 film, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’.
Violet’s character was lost and wanting to start over. I really identified with this character at the time I was naming my company, so I chose the name Violet Biggs and it stuck!
Some believe Gloria Graeme’s character was actually named Violet Bicks ( it is credited in the film as such), though if you research Violet Biggs, you will find a reference to her character in the film.
Either way, the name had grown on me, so Violet Biggs Productions was born in 1999.
